Chapter 8
Martinis
A week later, Vivian met Savannah after work one evening. They both worked late hours, and a lot of live music venues were close to Later Tonight, so Viv had been able to coordinate the meet up quite easily.
Viv had suggested they try the martinis at one of the coolest new bars to have opened in the neighborhood, under the guise of research. She reasoned with Savannah that she needed to stay on top of the competition if she wanted to be the best bartender in town.
After being seated in a quiet booth, and after one round of very strong drinks, Viv found herself staring into Savannahâs eyes again. Vivian felt like she was having an out of body experience.
âWhy donât you let me take you out some time?â
âWe are out,â Sav had replied.
âYes, but you know what I mean.â
Vivian didnât know why she was pushing her luck. She was getting along great with Savannah, and she really liked being her friend. But Viv couldnât shake the feeling that there was something more to explore, and that if Sav just opened her eyes to the possibility of falling for a woman, things could be perfect.
âOh yeah?â Savannah laughed. âOh wait, youâre serious.â Sav was a lightweight when it came to alcohol. The martini was strong, and Viv could tell that she was a little bit tipsy. But it felt like the right time to let her guard down and hoped that Sav would feel the same way.
âI am serious, Sav. I think youâre so beautiful.â Vivian decided to run with the truth, but she didnât want to be too pushy.
âReally?â Savannah almost squealed.
âI do.â Their eyes locked, and Viv felt how attracted she was to the woman before her.
âI mean. Iâm straight, Viv, you know that. Why canât we just be friends?â
âWhy canât we be something more?â
âItâs not you,â Sav insisted, and Viv felt immediately deflated. âItâs just, I like men. I always have.â
âI get it, really I do, and I wonât push it any further, I promise,â Viv said. âBut can I ask you one final question on the topic?â
âSure,â Sav said, smirking at her friend.
âWell, you can like men, and like women too.â
âThatâs true. But thatâs not a question!â Sav reprimanded.
âOkay, okay. Well, I guess my point is that itâs not just about sex,â Vivian tried to explain, but she didnât feel like she was doing a very good job. âFor me, it wasnât immediate, or easy. I didnât wake up one day and all of a sudden I wanted to have sex with someoneâs vagina. It was more than that. It was that I didnât hate the idea. So, I kept thinking about it, and I realized that I wanted my life to be adventurous. I wanted to explore the side of me that wanted to kiss a woman, to touch a woman. I wanted to give myself permission to enjoy my sex life, wherever that led.â
Sav sipped her martini and avoided looking at Viv directly. Eventually she said in a much quieter voice, âThatâs still not a question.
